Senior Drive-Bys By Ed Surbey

Our club’s first driving event for 2020 was a set of “Drive-Bys” for residents at Churchill Manor and Mill
Woods Shepherd’s Care Facility near the Grey Nuns Hospital on the afternoon of May 25th. The participa-
tion by EACC members, anxious to get back on the road after Covid-19 isolation was phenomenal, with 25
vintage vehicles spanning over seven decades of automotive history! The response from the residents was
excellent, with some taking photos of the event which they submitted to include in The Running Board!
We even got a “prospective new EACC member”, shown parked beside one of the club’s oldest rides.

This recent Saturday May 16th, Flix for Hope launched a one-day-only fund-
raiser for the University Hospital Foundation, held at the River Cree. Their
initial showings of The Princess Bride at 8pm and Grease at midnight sold out.
Naturally, they added a third showing of Shrek at 4pm, which, as you guessed,
sold out. Over $10,000 was raised for the Foundation.

Of course, for my first ever drive-in movie (which, fittingly, was Grease), I
had to take my faithful Model A, and enjoyed the midnight movie from the
rumble-seat. The organizers loved it, and even requested a few photos of my-
self parked in front of the screen before the movie started.

There were a couple times before and after the movie where a “honking-of-the-
horns” ritual was enjoyed by all. Without a doubt, these rituals provided me
with the best mileage I’ve ever had, if measured in “smiles-per-gallon”, courte-
sy of the other drive-in guests.
